Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide also known as “laughing gas” is a safe and effective sedation agent used to calm a child’s fear of the dental visit, enhance effective communication, and works well for children whose gag reflex interferes with dental treatment. Nitrous Oxide is perhaps the safest sedative in dentistry. It has a rapid onset, is reversible, and can be adjusted in various concentrations. A fitted mask is placed over the patients nose; Nitrous Oxide is mixed with Oxygen and is delivered as the patient breathes in and out. Your child remains fully conscious and keeps all natural reflexes. He or she will be capable of responding to questions or requests. Although Nitrous Oxide is well tolerated, not all children are alike, and it might not be effective for some children. Dr. Ryan will review your child’s medical history, level of anxiety, and dental treatment needs and inform you if Nitrous Oxide is recommended for your child.
